BROOKFIELD, CT — Firefighters extinguished a chimney fire at a residence on Brookfield Meadows Friday night. Crews from the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Company were dispatched to the home at 8:40 p.m. First responders found fire and smoke coming from the chimney. Firefighters used ground ladders to access the roof and an aerial ladder to go to work on the chimney. The chimney chains and "snuffer" — a specialized piece of equipment designed to quickly and safely suppress chimney fires using an ultra-fine spray — were both deployed down the chimney and interior crews cleaned all the burning debris from the wood stove. The scene was cleared by 10 p.m., BVFC officials reported. On social media, the Company took the opportunity to remind homeowners "to have their chimneys, fireplaces and wood stoves cleaned and inspected at least annually to prevent fires like this one."
