BROOKFIELD, CT — Firefighters took to the water on Saturday to handle a large brush fire near Lake Lillinonah. Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department's Candlewood Company's Marine 25 was requested on Saturday at 7:30 in the morning for mutual aid in Southbury for the blaze. Firefighters loaded up the Lake Assault craft with extra brush equipment, and responded to the area of the George C. Waldo State Park with a crew of five. "Since the area was deep in the woods and inaccessible by fire apparatus, Marine 25 used its pump and deck gun to begin saturating the fire area with water," the firefighters reported on social media. The fire was extinguished and the firefighters back at the station by 10:00 a.m. "This season continues to be a busy one for the water-related calls," a Candlewood spokesperson said on Facebook. "Without this piece of equipment, the town of Brookfield and surrounding areas would be severely deprived of maritime rescue and firefighting capabilities."
