BROOKFIELD, CT — The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a pool house blaze that broke out in the area of Cedar Hill shortly before 10 a.m. Friday.
First responders from both of the town's fire companies saw a large plume of smoke that could be seen from a distance, and a working fire with possible exposures to the main residence.
The large amount of chlorine tablets that were in the pool house presented a hazardous materials situation, according to fire officials, as the water and heat from the fire could potentially disperse that chlorine as a gas.
"Firefighters took appropriate precautions and evacuated some nearby residences," according to a statement from the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department Candlewood Company.
After the gas had dispersed, the tablets were placed in a metal container for disposal.
"Due to the quick actions of fire personnel on scene, the fire as well as the minor HAZMAT situation were both handled swiftly," firefighters posted on Facebook.
