A community-owned, locally controlled utility that is formed by a vote of the people and run by an elected, nonpartisan board of commissioners who are directly accountable to those voters. They serve millions of customers in Washington and have done so for almost 100 years. PUDs are operated for the people and by the people they serve. Why do we need a better option for our community' energy needs? A staggering 66% of Puget Sound Energy’s (PSE) electricity is generated using fossil fuel sources, making it the dirtiest utility in the state. In its January 2021 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), PSE indicated that it plans to build a new fossil fuel power plant in 2026. How can YOU help?Collect signatures (NOW!) We need to collect 35,000 valid signatures from registered voters who live in the proposed PUD area in order to qualify a ballot initiative for the November 2022 election. These must be handwritten but can be collected digitally. Vote to create a PUD for northeastern King County (November 2022) The question of whether or not to create an East King County Public Utility District will appear on the November 2022 ballot, along with the candidates to fill the 3 new PUD Commissioner positions. New PUD Commissioners hire a General Manager (January 2023-June 2023) The General Manager will have experience with utility management and the skills to create a new organization. Many current PSE employees in the service area will likely be offered jobs working at the new PUD. Negotiations begin to purchase PSE’s electrical infrastructure in the PUD service area (Starting January 2023) This process can take a few years and will involve in-depth valuations, purchasing agreements, and bond sales. PSE must comply with this process, as the PUD is now the only entity authorized to distribute power in the relevant service area. The most recent PSE to PUD transition took 4 years from voter passage to full PUD operation. Donate to support the rad folks in Yes to East King County PUD: https://ekc-pud.org/donate/
