Join us for the kickoff event for Mordecai Historic Park’s 50th anniversary! Free Saturday ToursTo celebrate the park opening on April 16, 1972, tours will be free on this special Saturday! Take a free tour of the park grounds and several of the historic buildings at Mordecai Historic Park. Tours take place on the hour, with the first tour starting at 10 am and the last tour leaving at 3 pm. Tours are first-come, first-served and are limited to 12 people per tour. Reservations can be made in person up to an hour before, so please be sure to arrive early! Self-guided maps will be available as well at the Visitor Center where you can explore two free exhibits to learn more about the history of the park. More Info Portraits of a Park: 50th Anniversary of Mordecai Historic ParkCheck out a new exhibit highlighting Mordecai Historic Park’s creation in 1972 and its past 50 years as a public park! See photos and newspaper clippings outlining the park's development over the years, from the initial plans for the park in the 1960s to changes in programming and the park's footprint throughout the decades. After exploring the site's history, share your own thoughts on what you would like to see at the park in the future at the end of the exhibit! This exhibit will be located inside the Mordecai Historic Park Visitor Center and will be free and open to the public. More Info Preservation in Practice: The Basics of Preserving Historic StructuresRestoration Specialist Brett Sturm from the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office will be providing a lecture on the preservation of historic structures and homes along with a walking workshop through the park and an opportunity to ask questions. This lecture and workshop will take place from 2 pm to 4 pm starting in the classroom at the Mordecai Visitor Center. More Info Hands-On History: Plant PigmentsStop by the garden for a free Hands-On History program where you can learn about plant-based dyes and try your hand at dying your own yarn to take home! Please arrive early for tours and the lecture to ensure you will get a spot/seat.
