This presentation will explore the value of psychologists constructing a professional narrative. Such a narrative can link up important pieces of a professional’s personal history with key developments over the course of one’s career. Narratives vitalize one’s experiences by transferring the past into the present and moving private experiences into the social world where they can be enriched. Professional narratives foster a sense of agency over one’s career and support the alignment of professional practices and personal values. They also contribute to a sense of continuity as a psychologist moves into retirement. Learning Objectives: 1. Gain insight and appreciation for the value of constructing a professional narrative as a tool in strengthening one’s professional identity. 2. Learn how narrative building can increase the congruence between values and professional activity. 3. Learn how to identify and use the narrative as a way of bringing one’s unique personal experience to the social world where they can be considered, analyzed, and form a basis for connection with others.
