A family-friendly, magical Earth Day cleanup in Palmer Park to search for treasures & pick up trash in the Aziza Fairy Door Forest
Children and families are invited to explore Palmer Park's magical Aziza Fairy Door Forest to search for about 200 tiny doors and help clean the woods during our Earth Day event. People for Palmer Park will steer you on the right path, with trash bags, gloves and clues. Be sure to wear bring your mask! Your adventure begins at the Palmer Park Community Center (the building covered in brightly colored circles at the end of the Splash Park parking lot at 1121 Merrill Plaisance).
Aziza are small magical nature spirits with a Western African heritage. They are similar to sprites, fairies and pixies. Seeing an Aziza can be a very lucky thing. They have been known to bestow knowledge and wisdom. Azizas can be quite shy and most likely will be hidden. As you explore Detroit’s Aziza Fairy Forest in the Palmer Park Witherell Woods, notice that many Azizas have their homes hidden among the trees. Look up in the treetops!
Explore the woods, find the doors, pick up the trash and make the woods beautiful and clean! …
…and take photos/selfies to share when you discover each tiny door to the Aziza homes. Share on social media to #PalmerParkDetroit The Aziza doors were created by the Charlotte Mason Community School students and Palmer Park Academy with wood donated by artists Roy Raines, John Rizzo, Kyle Huntoon and Darren Lasko. Help keep the park clean!
For people without young children, we welcome you and also invite you and older children to take part in our full park clean up the same day. Sign up here.
Please remove trash from the woods; use trash cans and help us end littering. We will provide directions where to return the trash bags.
