PRINCETON, NJ — An online fundraiser was launched for a Princeton graduate student and her sister, who were killed earlier this month in a car crash as they drove to visit their parents for the holidays. Cassidy Yang, 26, and her sister, Angel, 29, died in the Ohio crash on Dec. 5. A GoFundMe has been started to help their parents pay for the funeral. After the death of the young women, their family friends set up a GoFundMe, to help their parents pay for the funeral. The initial goal was to raise $100,000. But the overwhelming response from friends, colleagues, classmates and community saw the fundraiser exceed its goals. As of Monday, they raised $269,902. The Yang family, father Zhongjin Yang and mother Jie Yao, will use the money to start the Angel and Cassidy Yang Foundation. This foundation will work towards supporting girls and women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Cassidy was a fifth-year students in the Quantitative and Computational Biology program and was scheduled to complete her dissertation in May 2021. She graduated from Caltech in 2016, with a double major in physics and biology, before coming to Princeton. According to the Daily Princetonian, her professors described Cassidy as a "scientist and lab member with a strong determination to push through the difficulties she confronted." A virtual memorial was held for the sister last week. Thank you for reading. Have a correction or news tip? Email [email protected] Get breaking news alerts on your phone with our app. Download here.
