Press release from the El Paso Community College: April 6, 2022 Abigail Velez, a communication arts major at University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) and EPCC graduate, made her professional anchoring debut a year ago on "The Rundown," a twice-a-week show streaming on the "All in El Paso" network. Velez, who is concentrating in multimedia with a journalism emphasis, was contacted by network representatives who came across her online portfolio, which included stories she had written for the Logos and video packages for news and features she had worked on for University of the Incarnate Word TV (UIWtv), all done remotely from El Paso. She transferred to UIW in 2020. This past weekend, Velez won the title of Miss San Antonio 2022. "I still feel like this weekend was a dream, and one of the best parts was that I had so much fun along the way! Still soaking in every moment from this great accomplishment, but I'm ready to head to work and start getting out into the community!" said Velez. Below is the story done about Abigail when she spoke at the grand opening ceremony at the Northwest campus in 2020. My whole life, I have been a dreamer; I was raised to believe that the only limits that existed were the ones I put on myself. As a child, I dreamt about being a scientist, and I achieved that by winning Sweepstakes in my local science fair every year I participated. As I got older, I dreamt about being a princess, and I achieved that in 2016 by speaking to local schools about cyberbullying prevention, which led me to win the crown of Miss El Paso Teen USA. Now, as an adult, I dream about having my ideal career in sports broadcasting: courtside or on a sideline, reporting sports and keeping you up to date on the latest game, play by play. Being a student at El Paso Community College not only allows me to dream, but it equips me with the tools necessary to achieve and excel. EPCC has taught me and continues to teach me the skills I need in life to be victorious. Community college has taught me the importance of community and growth. I am proud to be a direct product of our beautiful El Paso, TX, a tight-knit, caring, safe city. This community college directly reflects those same characteristics. Students of EPCC, like myself, have so many amenities that come from the generosity of our community, like the tutors that make themselves available, the professors that never hesitate to go the extra mile for the success of their students; from the hands that prepare warm meals provided in the cafeteria to the custodians that never fail to share a smile with us as we pass them in the hallways, we are the emphasis in El Paso COMMUNITY College. As each semester passes, I can't help but feel a sense of accomplishment at the hard work my peers and I dedicated to each of our classes and our overall growth. Growth in knowledge after learning how to deliver a proper speech in Professor Cornelius' speech class, or westward expansion and globalization in Dr. Esmacher's history class, or maybe growth in our bodies from eating late-night junk food while we try to gather all our sources for our works cited page on the newest essay we're working on. Growth is so crucial in every person and every environment. We become progressive through growth and develop new breakthroughs and water more minds the way we water plants to help grow ideas of innovation and new dreams to achieve. Our new A Building at the Northwest campus is the perfect symbol and direct sign that El Paso Community College is growing and cares about the growth of its students. With this new building, our student body has a new tool to help us dream and dare us to achieve—a place where students can gather as a community This press release was produced by the El Paso Community College.
