Former State Senator In Critical Condition Following Crash

BRIDGEPORT, CT — A former state senator was critically injured in a motor vehicle crash Sunday evening, according to police. Edwin Gomes, 84, sustained serious injuries in the wreck on Boston Avenue. Another driver, Clive Henry, 19, of Bridgeport, sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the wreck. Emergency services received a call at 6:53 p.m. regarding a two-car crash at the intersection of Boston Avenue and Noble Avenue, according to police. Henry was driving a red 2002 Acura RSX was traveling westbound on Boston Avenue approaching the intersection with Noble Avenue as a gray 2010 Ford Fusion driven by Gomes was traveling eastbound on Boston Avenue. As Gomes attempted to turn left into the Kentucky Fried Chicken parking lot at 325 Boston Ave., his collided with the Acura traveling in the far right westbound lane of Boston Avenue, according to police. The impact of the cars colliding caused significant damage to the vehicles and injuries to both drivers. Emergency responders were able to rescue the drivers from their vehicles and quickly transport them to area hospitals. As a state senator, Gomes represented the 23rd District, which includes Bridgeport, from 2015 to 2019 and 2005 to 2013, according to his Wikipedia page. The Bridgeport Police Crash Investigation Team has responded to conduct further investigation. They are being assisted by the Southern Fairfield County Traffic Unit.
