'Not To Cause Fear,' Susquehanna Hose Co. Works To Prevent Virus

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — Due to the rise in coronavirus in the community, the Susquehanna Hose Company is taking measures to protect crews and citizens. "While our intent is not to cause fear or panic, we are taking all measures to protect those involved," the hose company said in a statement Wednesday. Firehouses will remain closed to the public until further notice, but people can always call 911 for help. Callers asking for help in any type of emergency will be screened for symptoms, whether it is police, fire or medical response that is requested. "Please keep in mind that this screening process is NOT delaying response," the Susquehanna Hose Company said in a statement, noting it is in place to protect first responders and residents alike. As of Wednesday, there were 4,959 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Harford County, including 303 cases in Havre de Grace, according to the Harford County Health Department. When responding to all calls for service, crews will be donning gloves, face masks and eye protection. This personal protective equipment will be standard procedure, "given the surge of COVID-19 cases in the state and throughout the country, to protect our volunteers and citizens," according to the Susquehanna Hose Company. In some cases, the Susquehanna Hose Company advised, personnel may wear more gear. "For calls involving persons under investigation (those with COVID-19 symptoms and/or confirmed positive) our personal protective equipment will be upgraded to include N95 masks & gowns," the Susquehanna Hose Company said in a statement. "Please follow the directions from the crews on scene, so we can reduce the risk of possible exposures." Those who need nonemergency assistance can call 410-638-3400.
