The state Office of Emergency Management told New Jerseyans to secure loose items in their yards, charge up mobile devices and check http://511nj.org for traffic updates if you must travel. Col. Pat Callahan, superintendent of State Police, speaking during a Friday news conference, said it was possible that many people could "wake up on Christmas with no power." Callahan said the wind is a "great concern," and he suggested that New Jerseyans should make sure they have generators "ready to go." Strong winds were expected to cause power outages and tree damage. Isolated showers and storms were to produce gusts of 70 mph or more, leading to wind damage, especially south and east of I-95. Here are the expected wind impacts: Callahan also said the quick melting of snow could lead to flooding, and then black ice could form once the temperatures drop on Friday night. Here are the expected flooding impacts: Here is what you should expect: AccuWeather says the storm was predicted to unleash rain that will eat away at the snow cover in New England and the coastal mid-Atlantic. The anticipated rainfall would be heavy enough to trigger flooding in urban and poor drainage areas, AccuWeather says. Winds moving 30 to 70 mph can not only send trash cans and holiday decorations sailing through neighborhoods, but trees can be knocked over in the high winds and pose a risk to motorists and pedestrians, according to AccuWeather. Regional to widespread power outages may happen along the mid-Atlantic coast and in New England from this storm, according to AccuWeather. Here is the forecast: Christmas Day: Rain before noon, then a slight chance of showers between noon and 1 p.m. Temperature falling to around 36 by 5 p.m. South wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.Friday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 21. West wind around 15 mph.
