Looking for small dog

My mother recently had to have her 12yo Akita put to sleep, and she is interested in having another dog. She cannot handle a large breed dog anymore at her age, and would prefer a lap dog. So something under 30lbs. Prefer something that doesn't require regular clipper type grooming, just brushing. She would prefer something older, partly because of energy level, partly because she does not want the dog to outlive her. She has always had female dogs. Male wouldn't be a definite no, but would have to be a great fit. I have checked WCAS, but everyone there is a larger bully breed mix. Dog needs to be housetrained. Dog needs to not want to try and eat strangers. Dog needs to not want to violently fence fight as there are dogs in all the neighboring houses. My mother is long retired and home almost all day everyday. She has a double lot privacy fenced yard. Dogs are welcome in bed/on furniture. I am a veterinary technician, so all vetting will be done religiously by me at work. With that said, due to the heartbreak my mother just went through, I would prefer any potential adoption to not have any MAJOR ongoing health problems.
