'The Singers/The Songs' YTV Festival Tribute featuring Windborne and other guests plus festival host musician Lisa Ornstein Family, friends, fans, students, collaborators, admirers and more pay tribute to 3 inspirational singers who passed in 2021: Larry Gordon, Tony Barrand and Norma Waterson. Larry Gordon - American singer, multi-instrumentalist, teacher, composer and conductor, based in Marshfield, Vermont. He was the co-founder and director of musical ensembles including the Onion River Chorus, Word of Mouth and Village Harmony. Generation after generation of teenagers went through his music camps and were transformed by the experience of singing together. Larry got them to become lifelong singers. Tony Barrand - British-born American folk singer and academic. He was a Professor of Anthropology, College of Arts and Sciences, Boston University. He is best known for his musical collaborations with John Roberts. As Roberts and Barrand, they performed a cappella and accompanied performances of traditional English folk music. They also performed and recorded sea shanties of the North Atlantic and traditional drinking songs. Tony and John was alf of Nowell Sing We Clear which recorded multiple albums and performed concerts throughout New England. He was also an expert morris and clog dancer, having taught across the United States, and written several books on the subject. She had a dynastic influence in British folk, not only for her work with the Watersons but also through her collaborations with the singer she married in 1972, Martin Carthy, himself a pivotal figure in British acoustic music, as well as through her joint albums and concerts with Eliza, their daughter. Tribute Hosts: Windborne - The four Windborne singers grew up immersed in the traditional song and dance communities of New England and discovered a love of world folk music in their teens. Over the past decade, Windborne has sought out masters of traditional singing styles in the US and around the world to study a variety of vocal music. Through these collaborations, they have developed the vocal agility and authentic sound for which they are known. Their dynamic concert programs include songs from Corsica, the Republic of Georgia, Bulgaria, Quebec, and Basque country, as well as traditional and original American folk music. They believe deeply in the power of music to change hearts. In addition to performing in New England and around the world, Windborne has taught workshops in schools, community centers, singing camps, and universities. Seasoned teachers and song-leaders, they delight groups young and old with enthusiastic, clear, and nuanced instruction for musicians of all levels of experience. Singers not only learn the notes of a song, but also work on the varied vocal styles, language pronunciation, and gain an understanding of the song in its original cultural context. In 2014, Windborne was one of 10 groups selected by American Music Abroad and the US Department of State to tour as cultural ambassadors through music. They traveled to Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Angola, touring with internationally known artists, performing at sold-out national theaters, and collaborating with traditional musicians in each country. They also taught music and dance workshops to schoolchildren, English-language learners, dance schools, choirs, and music conservatories. more info about Windborne at https://www.windbornesingers.com/ 2022 Festival Host Musician: Lisa Ornstein - Fiddle virtuoso Lisa Ornstein is an outstanding interpreter of the traditional music of French Canada and Appalachia, blending compelling and inventive playing with impeccable tune choice. Befriended by North Carolina fiddle legend Tommy Jarrell while she was in her teens, Lisa quickly became an accomplished fiddler in the Round Peak style. A musical friendship with Franco-American fiddler Louis Beaudoin in Burlington set her on a path to Quebec in 1978. When La Bottine Souriante — Quebec’s internationally renowned traditional supergroup — invited her to join the band, Lisa’s projected six-month stay began to stretch, eventually lasting twelve years. While in Quebec, Lisa spent countless hours visiting with older musicians and playing in kitchens and dance halls. She also squeezed in a master’s in folklore on the life and music of master fiddler Louis “Pitou” Boudreault. She has taught, concertized, and toured extensively in North America and Europe with some of Quebec’s finest musicians, and recorded for both Smithsonian Folkways and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Her music appears on a number of La Bottine’s albums, and on critically acclaimed CDs with former bandmates André Marchand and Normand Miron. Guests: Village Harmony alums, Andy and Arthur Davis, Heidi Wilson, Robert Resnik, Mary MacGinniss, Fred Breunig, Tim Eriksen and others. this concert is part of the 2022 YTV Festival May 2-8, 2022 Contois Auditorium in City Hall and other locations in/near downtown Burlington, Vermont All who attend should arrive vaccinated, boosted and masked, and be prepared to share vaccination documentation if requested.
