MONROE COUNTY, FL —A 74-year-old Seattle woman died Thursday after snorkeling at the Dry Tortugas National Park in Florida, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. The sheriff's office did not release a cause of death, but said autopsy results are pending. Authorities do not believe foul play was a factor in the incident. According to police reports, Carol Murrell Maillet was snorkeling along a fort wall by a beach area when family members and others heard her screaming due to an unknown reason. The victim was brought to shore and members of the public performed CPR. Maillet eventually was airlifted via Trauma Star helicopter to Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island, where she was pronounced dead at approximately 2:47 p.m., police said. The incident took place at Dry Tortugas, an area of open water and islands located 70 miles west of Key West. Authorities said the victim was not on a guided snorkel trip.
