NEWTON, MA — Superintendent David Fleishman announced Thursday that he will be leaving Newton Public Schools to become the President/Chief Executive Officer of JVS Boston, one of the largest providers of adult education and workforce development services in New England. Fleishman has served as superintendent in Newton for 12 years, guiding the district through many achievements, including full day kindergarten, 1:1 technology, and school building renovations, as well as many challenges, particularly those related to the COVID-19 pandemic. "I have cherished every moment in this role, working in partnership with you to support your children and our schools," Fleishman said in a letter to the school community. "However, as so many of you know, there comes a time in one's professional life when an opportunity presents itself that is the right next move and a natural next step." "While very different from a school district, the core mission of JVS aligns with my personal and professional commitment to advancing issues of economic and social justice through the lens of education, skill development, and support," he continued. Fleishman said he is confident that the faculty and staff in the district will continue to meet the needs of students and the School Committee will soon begin the process of finding a new leader for Newton Public Schools. "Newton has shown perseverance and resilience through tough times, and I am confident that the future is bright for this special district," he said. "It has been the privilege of a lifetime to work on behalf of our students, staff, and families and I am truly grateful for the experience."
