Description

VIENNA, VA — New temporary traffic changes will be coming to the Nutley Street interchange with Interstate 66, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. Drivers have seen changes to the ramps as the interchange is redesigned for the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The latest change will affect drivers on northbound and southbound trying to reach westbound I-66. Starting around April 13, there will be new turn lanes and a traffic signal to reach a temporary ramp onto westbound I-66. The current ramps from northbound and southbound Nutley Street to westbound I-66 will close. The temporary traffic changes will be in effect through July, according to VDOT. When the traffic changes happen, southbound Nutley Street drivers will turn left at the traffic signal onto a new ramp. Northbound Nutley Street drivers will continue past the current ramp entrance to a loop ramp to westbound I-66, then turn right at the traffic signal. See graphics provided by VDOT to see the traffic changes. Ramp closures will be in place April 12 and 13 ahead of the traffic pattern change. The ramp from northbound Nutley Street to westbound I-66 will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. During that time, traffic will continue north, stay to the left and make a U-turn from the left turn lane at the Virginia Center Boulevard intersection. From there, drivers will follow signs to I-66 West. On April 12 to 13, the ramps from westbound I-66 to northbound and southbound Nutley Street will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Traffic will be directed to exit at Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Station, stay right onto Country Creek Road, continue onto Virginia Center Boulevard, then turn onto Nutley Street at the traffic signal. In addition to the ramp closures, the right lane of northbound and southbound Nutley Street will be closed between Virginia Center Boulevard and Saintsbury Drive from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. from April 12 to 13. The redesigned Nutley Street Interchange will have two roundabouts, which VDOT says will improve safety for vehicles and pedestrians on Nutley Street. The Transform Outside the Beltway project is adding Express Lanes alongside regular lanes on I-66 between the Beltway and University Boulevard in Gainesville. The lanes are expected to open in December 2022.
