ARLINGTON, VA — The Arlington County Police Department closed roads around South Fillmore Street late Friday morning as officers responded to a mental health call for someone who is refusing to leave a house. The incident occurred in the 300 block of South Fillmore Street. Around 9:30 p.m., the police said the person inside the house had been taken into custody. Police blocked South Fillmore Street between 2nd Street South and 5th Street South. 7th Street South between South Walter Reed Drive and South Highland Street also was closed, as was 2nd Street South between S. Garfield Street and South Edgewood Street. South Fillmore St. turns into South Walter Reed Drive near 5 Street South. Both streets serve as a major link between Route 50 and Columbia Pike. "ACPD has responded to a mental health call for service in the 300 block of S. Fillmore Street," the police department said in a tweet Friday afternoon. "Expect continued police presence as officers work to safely resolve the incident." The incident started before noon. Both police and fire personnel are on the scene, as negotiators try to persuade the person to leave the home peacefully, ARLnow reported. The road closures forced Thomas Jefferson Middle School and Alice West Fleet Elementary School, located next to each other on 2nd Street South, to change how students were released from school Friday afternoon. "The ACPD will be assisting students who live in the vicinity of S. Fillmore and S. 2nd St. There is no ongoing threat to either school community," Arlington Public Schools said.
