2 Petaluma Homes Damaged In Residential Fire

PETALUMA, CA — Two homes were damaged and a family pet died in a house fire Thursday night in Petaluma. The fire was reported at 7:35 p.m. Thursday in the 400 block of Garfield Drive. Three engine crews, an ambulance crew and a battalion chief were on the scene within 5 minutes, and saw fire coming from the garage of a home as well as a car parked in the garage, Interim Assistant Fire Chief Chad Costa said. Heat and smoke had also extended onto an adjacent home. "Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible and were able to extinguish the fire prior to it extending into the interior of the home and without major damage to the adjacent home," Costa said. Two residents were evaluated for smoke inhalation but neither required hospitalization. "One family pet did perish in the fire; however, all other animals were saved," Costa said. No injuries to first responders were reported. Damage was estimated at $250,000, with damage to the garage and car of the primary home, some fencing between the two homes, and the exterior of the adjacent home. The cause of the fire remained under investigation. The City of Petaluma Fire Prevention Bureau, Building Department and Public Works responded to the scene. Crews from Rancho Adobe Fire, North Bay Fire and Sonoma Valley Fire also assisted with the incident by either sending crews or providing station coverage to ensure the city was protected, Costa said.
