Description
PETALUMA, CA — A fatal crash involving a pedestrian shut down U.S. Highway 101 in Petaluma for more than two hours Friday afternoon.
The collision was reported at 11:51 a.m. Friday on southbound US 101 just north of East Washington Street.
All southbound lanes were blocked and a Sig-alert was issued at 12:09 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The onramps to southbound US 101 at Petaluma Boulevard North and Old Redwood Highway were also closed.
Petaluma police said the closures caused heavy traffic congestion and backups and impacted traffic flow on surface streets in Petaluma.
Drivers were advised to avoid southbound US 101 from Old Redwood Highway to Washington Street until further notice.
"Any motorist diverted or needing to access Southbound Highway 101 are able to enter at Washington Street, Lakeville Hwy and Petaluma Blvd South to continue their Southbound travel," Petaluma police said. "Motorists are encouraged to please avoid the area if possible and allow plenty of time for travel."
Shortly after 2 p.m., the CHP reported all lanes were reopened.
