MURRIETA, CA —Residents of Murrieta's Mapleton Community will meet with area officials this month to discuss some hot topics in their neighborhood. The Murrieta Police department has arranged a meeting on Thursday, April 14, at 5 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Murrieta Fire and Rescue Station #4, at 28155 Baxter Road, the agency said. Murrieta police will discuss the community's quality of life issues, from homeless to speeding on area streets. Since the beginning of the year, Murrieta's Mapleton area has had over 36 recorded incidents ranging from DUI, assault, theft of cars, car parts and drug use. Vehicle break-ins, car theft, drug use and vandalism are the most significant issues, according to police. Community member Nic Kelly has lived in Murrieta since 1981, she told Patch in a recent interview. "My parents brought me here to escape crime," she said, but over the past 41 years, she has witnessed a "dramatic decline" in the quality of life for residents. "Never in a million years would I ever think that Murrieta would ever end up looking like every other California city," she said. "It's very sad for all involved." Speeding on the streets near her home to homelessness and vagrancy in area neighborhoods are issues Kelly cited. "We have more crime, trash and homeless issues. There is a general lack of caring by residents," she said. "We still are fortunate to live in the city we live in, don't get me wrong. It could be worse." Kelly has faith that the Murrieta police officers can create a solution to keep the city safer, adding, "if we could get our citizens to work hard to keep it clean and free from what's happening, that would be wonderful."
