Missoula County commissioners at their 2 p.m. public meeting on Thursday, April 7, will proclaim the month of April as both Fair Housing Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Fair Housing Month celebrates the Federal Fair Housing Act, which guarantees fair housing for all residents of the United States regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, familial status and disability, which was signed into law in April 1968. Sexual Assault Awareness Month calls attention to the fact that sexual violence is widespread and has public health and safety implications for the city and county of Missoula and beyond, and supports the efforts of national, state and local sexual assault prevention and response programs in their efforts to create safe and healthy communities. Read the proclamations and find the meeting agenda. The Missoula County Facilities Department is seeking bids for a Missoula County Detention Facility – AHU Fan Wall Replacement. The work will be contracted starting Monday, April 25, with the contract in effect until the completion of the project, which is anticipated to be June 30, 2022. A pre-bid conference will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, in front of the Missoula County Detention Facility, 2340 Mullan Rd. Bids are accepted until 2 p.m. Thursday, April 21. They see an increasing amount of traffic, and their conditions are a common topic of discussion between community members and the commissioners. Roads bring us together, and if you are wondering why some county roads are paved and others are gravel or seem to have fallen low on the priority list, this episode will help clarify the process and the multiple dynamics of road maintenance. Chief Public Works Officer Shane Stack explains how his department implements projects, and he talks through various aspects of County roads and bridges, sewer systems, potholes, infrastructure and community growth. Missoula County has leveraged new opportunities over the last few years. Shane talks through the BUILD grant award and the expansion happening in the Mullan area. He shares how American Rescue Plan Act funding helped fill the gap in local funding to assist our rural communities with long overdue improvements to sewer and waste treatment systems. He also shares an exciting update on a new parking lot coming to a popular river access in the County that will help alleviate recreation pressure in East Missoula. Keep listening to the end and you'll learn Shane's secret on how to build character, something he's relied on often during his career in both state and local government. I ensure that the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act standards are met across all county operations where applicable. Under the ADA, Title II applies to local and state governments, and for those governments with 50 or more employees, it requires an ADA coordinator. As the ADA coordinator I make sure a self-evaluation is conducted, which includes assessing our programs, services and activities along with county facilities and our current procedures, practices and policies. It also includes developing a transition plan and implementing it. Besides organizing and managing the assurance of the ADA, I assist with auxiliary aids and services as requested, investigate and help resolve grievances under the ADA, and serve as a resource on the ADA. I continue to meet with departments to understand their operations, programs and services so my role can better support departments. Although this position is new, I started at the County in 2007 as a senior community health specialist in the Health Department, and stepping into this role last August was a perfect fit for my public health background. Understanding the structure of the County when I started as the ADA coordinator has been helpful, but I continue to learn how immense county operations are and meet the fabulous folks that keep it all moving. I look forward to being a resource for county employees and programs regarding accessibility needs so that we can best serve everyone in our community. Outside of work, I enjoy long walks and conversations with my dogs, Pippa and Rory, partaking in puzzles with my cat, Olive, and reading on the patio in the summer. Besides that, I love to travel with my husband, far and near, experiencing other cultures, taking in the scenery across our planet and of course, partaking in culinary delights."
