BATAVIA, IL — If in the next week you start to wonder why trees are being removed along Kirk Road, city officials said it's part of the Mahoney Creek Tributary project. Workers will start the tree removal process — on the stretch of Kirk Road between Pine and Wilson streets — the week of April 11, weather pending. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approved permits on April 1, officials said, and construction will start shortly after the trees are removed. In anticipation of the removal, V3 Construction installed a construction entrance and put in erosion control measures April 1. The Mahoney Creek Tributary project is part of the city's focus on restoring stream quality throughout Batavia, officials said. This particular project will detain stormwater runoff upstream as a way to alleviate repeated drainage concerns and flash flooding along the Mahoney Creek Tributary and mainstream. The drainage area being focused on is generally bound by Wilson Street to the north, Woodland Hills Road to the west, Pine Street to the south and Fermi National Laboratory to the east. The runoff drains from the east under Kirk Road through city-owned property to the Fox River via Mahoney Creek, according to Batavia officials. The city hopes to retain runoff west of Kirk Road with a retaining wall, landscaping berm or another type of structure that will be constructed along the westernmost property line. Depending on the engineer's cost estimate, expanding the existing stormwater basin will be included as alternate work within the final bid package, officials said. Funding for the study and design of the Mahoney Creek Tributary project was funded by the city's budget allocated to alleviating drainage issues, and the basin's construction will be paid for using American Rescue Plan Act funds. Construction, which will last about 60 days, is expected to be complete in October, according to city documents.
