Bethel Scouts Give Stony Hill Preserve A Little Touch-Up

BETHEL, CT — Scouts BSA Troop 54 provided the Stony Hill Preserve with a much-needed touch-up this past weekend. The scouts dismantled two horse paddocks and repurposed the wood to create new fencing and a gate on the property. The additional wood will be used to refurbish raised beds in the gardens facing Stony Hill Road. The undertaking was part of a qualifying Eagle Scout project for Rhys Evans, 17. He was counseled by Troop 54 Scoutmaster and Stony Hill Preserve Board Member David Perkins. Evans is a 2020 graduate of Bethel High School. In total, 163 fence posts were removed, with all the post holes filled. Some of the salvaged materials will be used to install new fence lines and gates, separating the farmers market area from the back part of the property. The updated landscaping will enable the Stony Hill Preserve Trust to use the property for more socially distanced events. All of the gravel needed to fill the fencing post holes and even out the driveway was donated by the Tilcon facility on Eagle Road in Danbury. "We are so grateful for their help!" said Lisa Evans, Rhys's mom. "Being that Rhys's project is focused on conservation and repurposing, using natural stone products goes hand-in-hand with that idea."
