Authorities Rescue Dog Trapped Under Avalon Dock

AVALON, NJ — Avalon police and firefighters rescued a dog trapped under a dock that could have drowned Tuesday morning. Authorities received a 911 call at 10:30 a.m. about a drowning dog under a dock in the back bay off 42nd Street. The dog was all the way underneath the dock but able to breath from a small pocket of air. Officers who first arrived attempted to rescue the dog with a floatation device, but they couldn't reach it. Then Assistant Fire Chief Robert Ferguson arrived and jumped into the bay with a with a life jacket but wasn't able to secure the dog. More firefighters from Avalon and Stone Harbor arrived. Avalon Fire Inspector Lisa Sasdelli then jumped into the water and was able to rescue the dog. The dog was taken to a veterinarian for further evaluation.
