SOUTH JERSEY — Congressman Jeff Van Drew leads Democratic challenger Amy Kennedy as of midnight Wednesday. Van Drew declared victory Tuesday night, but Kennedy didn't concede. The Associated Press hasn't determined a winner as of midnight. Kennedy's campaign expects no determined winner on Election Night. "The majority of the remaining votes to be counted are in Atlantic and Cumberland counties which are Democratic counties Amy is currently winning and we fully expect to win," Josh Roesch, Kennedy's campaign manager, said in a statement. "At the end of the day when all the votes are counted, we are confident Amy Kennedy will be elected to Congress." Van Drew leads the race as of midnight with 141,202 votes and 51.01 percent of the overall vote. Kennedy has 131,336 votes or 47.66 percent. Out of 523 precincts, 388 have reported results as of midnight. But Van Drew, the Republican incumbent, felt confident his lead would hold. "This was a hard and brutal election," Van Drew told supporters. "A lot of money and a lot of power was used against me." After switching parties in December, Van Drew became one of only two Republicans representing New Jersey in the House of Representatives.
