The Hart Island Shoreline Stabilization project was a direct result of Super Storm Sandy to repair damaged areas for a cost of $5 Million.
The Hart Island Shoreline Stabilization project is the direct result of damage sustained from Super Storm Sandy. This major weather event caused major bluff and beach sand losses along the Island’s North Shore, exposing remains of interred bodies buried in various grave zones throughout the affected areas. Additionally, stone revetment walls along the East and West Island “hips” were heavily damaged. All areas noted required extensive restoration and rehabilitation, which was performed over an approximate 6–9-month period at a cost of about $5 million. Hart Island currently serves as NYC’s Potters field for New York City’s indigent population, is only accessible by regulated ferry, and has over one million remains buried. It is run by New York City Department of Corrections.
