Description
Myra Presents: Concerts in the Galleries featuring Paul Galbraith. Music returns to the North Dakota Museum of Art with the second performance of the season by Classical Guitarist Paul Galbraith. Paul Galbraith is internationally renowned as one of the foremost guitarists of our time. His revolutionary approach to guitar, allied to the searching depth of his interpretations, has made him an instantly recognizable figure in the world of classical music. Galbraith plays a unique 8-string guitar, which he developed in 1993 together with legendary luthier, David Rubio. Rubio’s design departed from the established format, through borrowing a radical asymmetrical stringing system from the ‘Orpharion’, a renaissance instrument of the lute family. It was named the ‘Brahms’ Guitar, due to its richness of sound and wide range. The musician’s individual approach to guitar technique stems from an idea he had in 1984 to free the right arm from holding, or resting on, the instrument. The resulting freedom enables an unencumbered flow between movement and sound. He continued to develop and refine his new-found playing position until, by 1987, it hadevolved into the cellist’s posture he is associated with today. A frequent guest on National Public Radio’s “Performance Today,” and twice featured on “All Things Considered,” Galbraith was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Solo Instrumental Album for his two-disc recording Complete Back Violin Sonatas and Partitas. The album also reached Top Ten on Billboard’s classical charts and received a 4-star rating in Stereo Review. On April 24th, Mr.Galbraith will perform works by Mozart, Bach, Hindemith, Schumann, Granados and Albeniz. Children 12 and under and youth orchestra members are free. This concert is supported by the Myra Foundation and additional grants from the North Dakota Council on the Arts the City of Grand Forks.
