FREEPORT, NY — History was made on Thursday when the Senate voted 53-47 to approve Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson's nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. She becomes the first Black woman to be appointed to the nation's highest court. Following the bipartisan vote, Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams (D - Freeport) issued the following statement: "By shattering the glass ceiling at our nation's highest court, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson has shown the next generation of America's leaders - some of whom are studying in the classrooms of the First Legislative District as we speak - that anything is possible," Abrahams said. "April 7, 2022 is a date that will shine as a beacon of hope and progress in the history of our nation, and I pray that today's vote will be a catalyst for breaking down even more barriers in the pursuit of a more perfect union." Jackson, 51, will fill the slot on the bench of Justice Stephen Breyer, who is retiring this summer.
