Teacher, Student Find Racist Graffiti At Brookline High School

BROOKLINE, MA — A Brookline High School teacher and student discovered hateful graffiti, including a racial slur, on the whiteboard inside a classroom Wednesday morning, said Head of School Anthony Meyer in a message to the school community. The district believes the graffiti was written inside the classroom sometime between 4 p.m. on Tuesday and 8:15 a.m. Wednesday. Meyer said the classroom was locked, but possibly accessible. "This sickening display of hate will not be tolerated and we are opening a full scale investigation with the Brookline Police," said Meyer. "The teacher and students directly harmed are being supported, and we have notified the superintendent's office about this incident." Brookline High School students and staff who have any further information about the incident are asked to alert school officials immediately. "Your help is essential to finding the person or persons responsible for this hate," said Meyer. The incident comes after hundreds of Brookline High School students walked out of classes earlier this month in response to a series of racist videos circulating social media and racial slurs being screamed in school hallways. Earlier this week, the Brookline School Committee released a statement pledging to "do better" when dealing with racism and discrimination within the district.
