REDWOOD CITY, CA — The County of San Mateo is awarding more than $3.2 million in grants to allow more than 2,500 local students to attend summer enrichment programs, the county announced Wednesday. The grants, which are funded by the federal American Rescue Plan Act stimulus, will fund 42 providers operating 72 programs, the county said in a news release. The county said that it chose providers from all areas of the county that incorporated equity, hands-on learning, and program services into their programming. The grants also aim to mitigate socioemotional and educational challenges brought on by the pandemic. "In conversations with educators, early learning providers and after-school program directors, staff heard that many students, especially those in kindergarten through second grade, are behind in the development of their social and emotional skills due to isolation and distance learning during the pandemic," Assistant County Executive Officer Peggy Jensen, who is helping to lead the County's pandemic recovery effort, said in a statement. Grant recipients received their funds last week. Recipients include Casa Circulo Cultural, Boys and Girls Clubs of the Peninsula, the City of Pacifica, San Francisco 49ers Academy, Live In Peace, Inc. and the City of South San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department.A full list of grant recipients is available here.
