Police Officer In Jersey City Pleads Guilty To Assault By Auto

JERSEY CITY, NJ — A Jersey City Police Officer pleaded guilty this week to a charge of assault by auto, relating to a 2020 crash between his police vehicle and a bicyclist he was pursuing. Christopher Hill, 27, pleaded guilty to the disorderly persons offense before Judge Carlo Abad. As part of his plea, Hill will forfeit all present and future employment in law enforcement, effective immediately, said the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday, May 12, 2022. According to the Prosecutor's Office, an investigation revealed that on Sept. 20, 2020, Hill, while on duty with the Jersey City Police Department, "was operating a marked police vehicle in a reckless manner while in pursuit of a bicyclist on Ravine Avenue." According to a release, "Hill struck the bicyclist with his vehicle, causing bodily injury to the male cyclist." Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez credited the HCPO Public Integrity Unit with the investigation. The office did not release further information.
