HOBOKEN, NJ — Hudson County began milling and repaving all of Hudson Street Monday, and will continue from 14th Street down to Observer Highway until the project is finished. The repaving is necessary because the city and Suez water have been making water main upgrades between Fourth Street and 10th Street on Hudson Street. The repaving will also include restriping bike lanes and high visibility crosswalks, in addition to new ADA-compliant curb ramps installed last year, as part of the City's Vision Zero initiative to eliminate all traffic-related deaths and injuries by 2030. The upgrades have included replacing 2,700 feet of 6-inch diameter water mains with 12-inch diameter water mains, new valves, 10 new fire hydrants, and 150 new service lines. In 2019, the city entered into a restructured agreement with SUEZ launching a $33 million investment into comprehensive water main upgrades through 2034 and accompanying technology advancements to facilitate leak detection and loss prevention citywide. This year, the City and SUEZ are scheduled to install nearly 5,000 linear feet of new, upgraded water mains across 11 city blocks as part of phase II of the Water Main Replacement Program. The city and SUEZ have installed approximately 16,500 linear feet of new water mains since the Washington Street Redesign Project, as well as over 20 sensors to pinpoint leaks as they happen. These upgrades allow the City and SUEZ to prioritize and facilitate leak repairs quickly before they become breaks saving the City thousands of dollars in emergency repairs. Hudson Street improvements are also part of the City's 2022 Resurfacing and Complete Streets Program. Construction schedules will be posted on a weekly basis, at www.hobokennj.gov/construction.
