Police to Crack Down on Distracted Drivers

By Sarah Kuper, WNIN April 7, 2022 April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and Indiana's governor and law enforcement officials have announced a crackdown. A proclamation from Governor Eric Holcomb describes distracted driving as any activity that diverts attention away from safely operating a vehicle. But officials say these days, that's most often texting or taking pictures or videos. In 2020, Indiana took steps to curb the dangerous driving when it passed the hands-free driving law, and now state and local law enforcement are joining together for a one-day enforcement campaign on April 7th that will specifically target distracted drivers. This means more patrols and citations. It's call the "Connect 2 Disconnect" campaign and it is happening all over the country. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 8% of US road fatalities in 2020 were a result of distracted driving.
