Hello, neighbors! It's me again, Jeri Karges, your host of the Sacramento Daily. First, today's weather: Record-tying heat. High: 91 Low: 56. Here are the top five stories today in Sacramento: The mass killing that left six people dead and 12 wounded outside bars just blocks from California's Capitol last weekend was a gunfight involving at least five shooters from rival gangs, Sacramento police said Wednesday. "We're still working through ... who the actual shooters are in the case," Sgt. Zach Eaton said. Until Wednesday's announcement, police had been silent on what led to the shooting. Police said at least two gangs were involved. They declined to provide more details or name the gangs involved or the affiliation of any suspects. Authorities credited witnesses who contributed nearly 200 videos, photos and other tips with helping the investigation. But there is one thing that sets him apart...he's a Grammy winner! At the award ceremony in Los Angeles, Jayvyn took home an award for his vocal performance in the Best Children's Album winner "A Colorful World." Way to go, Jayvyn! (ABC10) Sacramento rapper and former gang member Aaron Cardoza announced plans to launch what he's calling the Save Sac Coalition. Cardoza said he went to prison at the age of 18 for a shooting, and he is convinced that it will take former rival gang members to take back the streets. "You have to have ones that can connect with these kids or these young adults that they understand and they know. If they don't know you, how can they believe you? How can they trust in you?" Cardoza said. (ABC10)For nearly seven decades, Cristo Rey High School in Rancho Cordova has excelled at helping students from underserved communities get into college. The school uses an income cap to ensure that the students enrolling are among the most vulnerable. This is done to bring more opportunities to these families. In 2021, 99% of Cristo Rey's graduating seniors were accepted to college, many on full scholarship offers. More than 90% of the school's operating budget is funded through donations and a work-study model allows students to also pay for their education themselves. That work covers about 60% of the cost of the students' education. There are currently 310 students enrolled at Cristo Rey High. (KCRA3)Currently, the County has nearly 6,000 uncashed checks, totaling more than $2.1 million. How does this happen and could this be your unclaimed money? If a Sacramento County issued check goes six months without being cashed by the rightful payee, the information becomes available in a PDF document on the Unclaimed County Warrants (checks) webpage. The data is also searchable on the County's Open Data portal. If you find your name or business on the data listing, go to the Unclaimed County Warrants webpage to find out about the documentation and information needed to validate that you are the rightful payee to receive the funds.
