Press release from San Diego County Sheriff's Department:
April 5, 2022
A 26-year-old man is facing new charges after briefly escaping from custody at a hospital in La Mesa. He was quickly located and arrested.
On March 29, San Diego Police arrested Javier Perez (DOB: 9/10/1995) on several charges, including felony possession of a firearm and child endangerment.
On Monday, April 4, Perez was making an appearance at the El Cajon Courthouse when he suffered a medical emergency. He was taken by ambulance to Sharp Grossmont Hospital in the 5500 block of Grossmont Center Drive for an evaluation.
While at the hospital, Perez asked to use the restroom just after 6:30 p.m., but suddenly ran from the Sheriff's Deputy guarding him. The deputy ran after him, but Perez jumped from a second story parking garage and was able to leave the hospital grounds.
Sheriff's ASTREA (helicopter) and the La Mesa Police Department were called in to help search for Perez. He was located in a creek next to the trolley tracks not far from Sharp Grossmont Hospital around 7:00 p.m.
Perez is being treated at the UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest after complaining of pain. He is now facing new charges related to his escape.
