JOLIET, IL — A Joliet officer shot a man late Wednesday night in the 100 block of Linden Avenue because the man was running from a traffic stop holding his gun, police said. The shooting happened at 11:12 p.m. near Gardner Street on the city's southeast side. According to Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English, a man who was a passenger in a car ran from the traffic stop holding a gun. "An officer caught up to the suspect, who refused multiple commands regarding the handgun. The officer then discharged his duty weapon, striking the suspect," English said. The man who was shot continued to run after being struck by gunfire and was found nearby, hiding from police, English said. Officers immediately rendered medical assistance upon the discovery of the suspect. A handgun was recovered at the scene. The man who was shot was taken to the hospital and his medical condition was not known yet, English said. The Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force was immediately notified to conduct the investigation of the Joliet police officer's shooting, and its investigators took over the scene. "This is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public," English stressed. Joliet's Bob Hernandez was first on the scene to inform his Facebook followers of the Joliet shooting, and WGN Channel 9 used Hernandez's video footage as part of Thursday morning's news report. Hernandez spent more than 90 minutes walking around and informing his followers of the details of what was happening on Linden Avenue. Image via Google Maps
