Master Quiltmaker To Be Honored At Annual Art Star Awards

LAGUNA BEACH, CA — The Laguna Beach Arts Alliance has big plans to honor big artists during its upcoming Art Star Awards on April 24. One of those artists is master quiltmaker Allyson Allen, who will be honored as the 2019 winner of the $5,000 Honarkar Family Grant, organizers announced Wednesday. Allen used the grant money to create "Piece-ful Protect," an exhibit which consists of 36 quilts with accompanying handmade journals, a Laguna Beach Arts Alliance news release said. At the annual award event, Allen will speak during the ceremony and several of her quilts will be on display for attendees to view. Allen's work addresses issues of a national and global concern. Through her craft, she addresses climate change, COVID-19, the Black Lives Matter movement, homelessness, LGBTQ rights, women's issues, immigration and more. "Receiving the grant made it possible for me to create over a dozen new quilts, resulting in enough work for the current exhibit. I always want my work to encourage dialogue and spark teaching moments, and I think this exhibit has done exactly that." "Piece-ful Protest" was initially scheduled to be displayed at the Community Art Project gallery space located on the second floor of Wells Fargo Bank in Laguna Beach, but was ultimately taken down at the direction of Wells Fargo following some customer complaints. Currently, the collection is available for public viewing Thursday through Sunday, noon to 2 p.m. through April 24 in Bridge Hall at Neighborhood Congregational Church in Laguna Beach.
