Suffolk Theater announces weekend of events honoring Juneteenth and the impact that Black artists have had on American music with a film on Friday, June 17 at 8:00PM and a concert on Sunday, June 19 at 7:00PM. JUNETEENTH TRIBUTE TO THE HEROES OF BLACK MUSIC on Friday, June 17 at 8:00PM will be an evening of electrifying and rare footage of performances by some of the most iconic of Black musicians of all time. The evening with be hosted and the film will be compiled by Joe Lauro from Historic Films Archive. Since 1991, Historic Films Archive has provided hundreds of thousands of clips to award winning documentaries, television programs, feature films, and television commercials. Their world renowned library of musical performances and entertainment footage spans a century and contains over 45,000 individual performances from over 35 different television networks and programs including the world's finest museums and Broadway shows. This specially curated film will include never-before-seen footage of Jimi Hendrix, Sly & The Family Stone, Prince, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Michael Jackson, and so much more along with commentary from Joe Lauro himself. A NIGHT OF SOUL WITH GRAMMY-NOMINATED BRIAN OWENS on Sunday, June 19 at 7:00PM will take audiences on a journey through the soul of America with music from Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Sam Cooke, Dobie Gray, and more featuring Grammy-nominated singer Brian Owens. Brian Owens is a singer, songwriter, and dedicated community activist who uses music and love to define his artistry. These qualities radiate from all of his work, including his duet with five-time Grammy-winning and legendary vocalist Michael McDonald on his Soul of Ferguson album, and the heartfelt interpretation of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come," which Owens filmed and recorded with his father, Thomas Owens. Their powerful performance ignited the internet and has received more than 100 million views on Facebook and Brian's own YouTube channel. As a community advocate, Owens is also the founder and Executive Director of L.I.F.E. Arts Inc (Leadership, Innovation, Faith and Entrepreneurship), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides artistic resources, opportunities, mentoring and positive experiences to help students in underserved communities throughout Ferguson and the St. Louis metropolitan area to access consistent and localized programs, experiences and infrastructure. Additionally, Owens serves as the Community Music Artist in Residence with the E. Desmond Lee Fine Arts Collaborative at the University of Missouri St. Louis.
