Newark Police Get $12,000 For 2020 DWI Crackdown

NEWARK, NJ — Starting Friday and continuing through Jan. 1, 2021, law enforcement officials throughout New Jersey, including Newark, will be cracking down on drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs as part of the annual end-of-year "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" statewide campaign. To assist with New Jersey's enforcement efforts, the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety has awarded grants totaling $656,340 to 112 towns across the state to fund enhanced patrolling and high-visibility sobriety checkpoints throughout New Jersey during the month of December. The Newark Police Department was among the agencies that got funding to take part in this year's campaign, netting $12,000 for the effort. Last year, the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over holiday campaign resulted in 1,380 DWI arrests (alcohol and/or drugs) statewide; and participating police agencies issued 4,960 and 2,023 speeding and seat belt summonses, respectively, officials said. A number of departments reported noteworthy accomplishments, including 14 agencies making 13 or more DWI arrests during the campaign.
