Tampa Bay Medical Research is offering FREE liver scans. This is a part of our community outreach program to teach people about liver disease. The liver scan is completely free. We do not collect any payment or insurance information. Your appointment would be scheduled for approximately 30 minutes. The non-invasive scan takes about 10 minutes to complete. You will be given a copy of your results along with an information sheet and have an opportunity to speak with out Doctor. It is important to us to provide education about liver health, specifically early awareness about NASH Disease (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis). NASH affects over 7 million people and symptoms do not develop until it progresses to cirrhosis, which is irreversible and can lead to liver disease or liver cancer. The results of a liver scan can provide individuals more information about their health. Currently, there are no FDA approved treatments for NASH, BUT, if individuals are suspected to have NASH, we can offer treatment options through clinical research trials. The onset of COVID19 has resulted in a potential rise in cases of NASH as the more sedentary lifestyle leads to increased weight gain leading to worsening of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, all potential driving forces of NASH. Therefore, identifying individuals with NAFLD and NASH is essential to decrease their risk of developing further decline, resulting in cirrhosis.
