NEWARK, NJ — A man tried to carjack an armored car in Newark on Thursday, but didn't get any cash. A search for the suspect continues, authorities said.
According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, police responded to the Wells Fargo on South Orange Avenue around 1:30 p.m. after getting a call about an attempted carjacking.
The incident began when a man entered a Garda armored vehicle, which had a security guard inside. The armored vehicle took off, striking two parked cars before the would-be carjacker fled the scene on foot, heading southbound on Stuyvesant Avenue towards Rockland Terrace, police said.
The guard suffered a minor injury to his right hand. He was transported to University Hospital for treatment, police said.
Detectives are seeking the public's help finding the suspected carjacker, who was described as a man from 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 10 inches with a medium build, wearing black clothing, a blue baseball cap (possibly a Giants cap) and a surgical mask.
