Description

Author Colm Tóibín shares his newest novel A New York Times Notable Book Colm Tóibín’s newest novel opens in a provincial German city at the turn of the 20th century, where young Thomas Mann is growing up with a conservative father, bound by propriety, and a Brazilian mother, alluring and unpredictable. Mann hides his artistic aspirations from his father and his homosexual desires from everyone. He becomes the most successful novelist of his time (Death in Venice, The Magic Mountain), the winner of the 1929 Nobel Prize—and also a public man whose private life remains secret. In this acclaimed book, as Michael Cunningham (The Hours) puts it, “Tóibín takes us almost shockingly close to the mystery of art itself.” This is an in-person event.
