French Canadian duo shares traditional fiddle melodies and dance tunes. This French Canadian duo will lead a workshop at UVMC in advance of the concert. Nicolas Babineau and Alexis Chartrand together explore the musical universe of Québécois fiddlers. Inspired by a century of fiddle melodies and dance tunes, they offer an intimate, personal and truly contemporary vision of this repertoire. Melodies for two fiddles reveal sensitive and vulnerable sonorities, while the guitar accompaniment brings long medleys to surprisingly energetic conclusions, all bolstered by the percussion of their feet. Their first album, Gigues à 2 faces (2017), revealed them as “among the most promising talents of Québécois trad." Their second album, un beau ptit son (2019), confirmed them as “two must-hears of Québécois traditional music." Babineau/Chartrand has presented their arrangements in Québec, across Canada, in the United States and in Sweden. Since 2020 with the introduction of a new instrument to the duo, the baroque violin, they have presented traditional melodies carried by the captivating timbre of this historical instrument, building new bridges between folklore and early music. These unique endeavours have been supported by the Montreal Arts Council and the Centre des Musiciens du Monde, allowing the duo to share their introspective and deeply sensitive vision of Québécois repertoire.
