Description

Join us for a special in-person performance with AIR alums Mansur Nurullah, Kate Rhoades, and Jeremy Rourke. Flashover, defined as the moment a conversation becomes real and alive, will take place 7:00-9:00pm on Friday, April 29 at the Recology Environmental Learning Center and galleries. The evening will also include studio visits with current artists Rania Ho and Leonard Reidelbach. Space is limited, proof of vaccination and registration is required. The event will begin at 7:00pm at the Environmental Learning Center at 401 Tunnel Avenue, and transition to the Gallery at 503 Tunnel Avenue at 8:00pm. Mansur Nurullah - Dust 'till Dawn As the event host and MC, my performance will begin with an introduction to Flashover and an interactive game with guests, ending with continued commentary throughout the event. Kate Rhoades - History of Dust Rhoades will be presenting an illustrated history of dust. From the ashes of paleolithic bonfires to the craters of the moon- dust rules everything around us! In her capacity as a world renowned historian and philosopher (and humorist) Rhoades will guide attendees on a freewheeling mind-voyage through time and space as we ponder the particulars of particles and their outsized impact on our lives. Jeremy Rourke - The Writing in the Dust Jeremy is way WAY beyond excited for that a reprise of his Recology exhibition expanded cinema performance from 2014 is part of this Flashover! He is tuning his harp and guitar and finding pieces discarded from 2014 that were clearly actually made for 2022. Come see the fog crest San Bruno mountain while a toaster crumbles like paper and a woman dances now on the outside of the very studio wall where she was animated. Studio tours will be led by current artist in residence Rania Ho and SFSU graduate student artist Leonard Reidelbach. Mansur Nurullah Mansur Nurullah is a San Francisco based textile artist. He was an artist in residence at Recology in 2019 and most recently an artist in residence with the San Francisco Planning Department, courtesy of the San Francisco Arts Commission. Kate Rhoades Kate Rhoades lives and works in Oakland, California. Her work has been presented in the San Francisco International Film Festival and the Santa Fe International New Media Festival. Rhoades has participated in exhibitions at Trestle Gallery in Brooklyn, Southern Exposure in San Francisco, and various venues, publications, hotel rooms and alleyways across the globe. Since 2014 she has co-hosted the Bay Area's number one arts and culture podcast, Congratulations Pine Tree. Rhoades was also a Jay DeFeo Prize winner in 2014 and one of the Fleishhacker Foundation's Eureka Fellowship grantees in 2018. Jeremy Rourke Jeremy Rourke is a stop motion animator, creating 12 frame per second homes for his performative, musical, educational and collaborative endeavors. He has done residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, Djerassi, Recology and taught the techniques of this handmade craft at Saint May’s College, SF State, UC Davis and CASA (children’s after school arts). His work has been performed or screened at Other Cinema, The Exploratorium, Frameline Film Festival, Ashland Independent Film Festival, Shapeshifters Cinema, The Roxie Theater, and Artists Television Access. Most recently a film he produced animation for, When We Were Bullies, was nominated for an Academy Award in the short documentary category.
