Description

Press release from the Town of Wakefield: April 5, 2022 On April 6, 2022, renovations will begin on Wakefield's Public Safety Building on Union Street. To accommodate the construction, the public entrances will be temporarily moved to the south side of the building on Princess Street. Separate doors will be used for Fire Department and Police Department business. Although a construction-staging area will prevent through traffic on Union Street, there will be no change to the traffic flow on Princess and Centre Streets. The sharps recycling bin has been temporarily moved from the Public Safety Building lobby to the entrance vestibule at 5 Common Street. The prescription take-back bin will temporarily be unavailable. Instead, community members are encouraged to attend the National Medication Take-Back Day event on Saturday, April 30. This event, in partnership with the Wakefield Police Department, Wake-Up, and Walgreens, will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Walgreens Pharmacy, 572 Main Street. See full event details. Residents can also utilize the take-back service regularly offered by CVS and Walgreens. At Annual Town Meeting in June 2020, residents voted for an expansion and interior renovation of the police side of the Public Safety Building to address significant challenges the department faces due to their space limitations. The proposed plan brings the left-front quadrant of the building forward, to line up with where the fire-side of the building was expanded to in 2004. Construction is slated to begin on April 6, 2022, and is scheduled to last through May 2023. To learn more about the project, including FAQs and video tours, visit www.wakefield.ma.us/public-safety.
