NEWTON, MA — The Carroll Center for the Blind, one of the largest vision rehabilitation agencies in the country, will host its 10th annual 5K & Walk for Independence in-person on Saturday, May 14 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The 5K & Walk for Independence will include options for a 5K run and one mile walk aroundthe Mount Ida Campus of UMass Amherst, located at 100 Carlson Ave in Newton. Afterwards, there will be complimentary food, music, accessible games, and more, with family friendly activities including a bounce house, lawn games, Beep Baseball, Touch-a-Truck, K-9 dog demonstrations, and even a visit from a few members of the New England Patriots. "We are excited to celebrate the return of an in-person event as we welcome our friends, families, supporters and the community-at-large to our 10th annual 5K & Walk for Independence," said Greg Donnelly, CEO of the Carroll Center for the Blind, in a statement. "Every step wetake, every dollar we raise, puts people with vision loss further on the path to independence." The event will be emceed by Antoinette Antonio of WCVB-TV Channel 5. Sponsors include PLAN of MA & RI, Point32Health, Bowditch, WCVB-TV Channel 5, WXLO-FM (104.5) radio, and many others. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Carroll Center's mission of empowering those who are blind or visually impaired to achieve independence and lead a fulfilling life. Since 2013, the annual 5K & Walk for Independence has raised more than $1 million for individuals in different stages of vision loss.
