Here are the top three stories today in Norfolk: COVID cases have dropped drastically in the Norfolk area and throughout the state. "We are now on the downside of the Omicron peak," said Dr. Brooke Rossheim, Public Health Physician Specialist, Office of Epidemiology with the Virginia Department of Health. According to the VDH, case counts in Virginia are hovering around 900, with approximately 241 hospitalizations. (News 3 WTKR Norfolk)The Norfolk Police Department is asking the public for help in identifying two suspects caught on surveillance footage inside a 7-Eleven after a shooting that left one man with life-threatening injuries. Police have released still images of the suspects and a vehicle. The shooting occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the 7-Eleven located at 3800 Granby Street. (The Virginian-Pilot)Norfolk is one of five Hampton Roads cities that will be connected to a 119-mile fiber ring that will link residents to ultrafast internet, possibly the fastest on the East Coast. On Wednesday, Southside Network Authority officials broke ground on the new ring that will connect Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, and Portsmouth to transatlantic subsea fiber optic cables from Europe and Africa. "Basically what this does is it makes Hampton Roads a digital gateway," said Andria McClellan, Southside Network Authority vice-chair and Norfolk City Council member.
