OFF POINT PLEASANT, NJ — A 46-year-old man who suffered a medical emergency was medevaced from a fishing boat about 45 miles offshore on Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
The Coast Guard said another crew member aboard the Captain John, a sportfishing boat out of Point Pleasant, notified the Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay watchstanders of the emergency about 5:30 p.m., via marine radio.
The watchstanders then consulted the duty flight surgeon, who recommended a medevac, and an MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter crew was sent from Air Station Atlantic City, the Coast Guard said.
Additionally, a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Barnegat Light was sent to provide support, officials said.
The man was safely lifted off the Captain John about 6:30 p.m. and taken to Air Station Atlantic City, where he was transferred to awaiting emergency medical services personnel, who then took him to a hospital. The man's condition was not available Wednesday night.
"Communication is key on the water," Coast Guard officials said. "Having a VHF marine radio is the most reliable way to alert the Coast Guard to emergencies at sea."
The Coast Guard urged boaters who do not have a marine radio to learn more on the Coast Guard website.
