NEW JERSEY — A total of five candidates have filed to run in the 2022 primary election in New Jersey's 10th congressional district, according to an unofficial list from the New Jersey Division of Elections. The candidates who filed for the Democratic nomination by Monday's deadline include incumbent U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr., Imani Oakley and Akil Khalfani. The candidates vying for the Republican nomination include Garth Stewart and David Pinckney. The 2022 primary election in New Jersey takes place on Tuesday, June 7. The winners of that election will earn their party's nomination for the general election, which takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 8. DEMOCRATS Payne, who listed Newark as a filing address and gathered 9,933 petition signatures, was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012. He successfully defended his seat in 2020. Oakley, who listed Montclair as a filing address, gathered 773 petition signatures and ran on the slogan "Pride. Progress. New Jersey" in all three counties. Khalfani, who listed Newark as a filing address, gathered 757 petition signatures and ran on the slogan "Democrats For Change" in all three counties. REPUBLICANS Stewart, who listed Jersey City as a filing address, gathered 269 petition signatures and ran on the slogan "FOG - Friends of Garth" in all three counties for the Republican nomination. Pinckney, who listed Irvington as a filing address, gathered 374 petition signatures.
